Key point extraction sits between summary and Q&A. A summary tells you what the document is about, in prose. Key points give you a scannable list of the document's content, in bullets. Q&A answers specific questions you bring. Each format has its place — key points are right when you want to scan a document quickly for its essential content, without committing to reading a prose summary or formulating specific questions.
Useful scenarios: extracting the action items from a meeting notes document, pulling the key findings from a research paper, identifying the main terms of a contract, listing the steps in a procedure document. In each case, the output is a focused, scannable list that captures what the document wants you to remember.
Like all AI tools, key point extraction has limits. The AI's sense of what's 'key' may differ from yours — it might highlight a procedural detail while missing a strategic implication. Treat the output as a starting point for your own analysis, not a substitute for reading when the content matters.
