AI for resume screening, ethically

Resume screening is one of the highest-volume, lowest-leverage tasks in recruiting. A single open role can attract hundreds of applications, and a recruiter might have time to deeply read 20 of them. AI tools can help surface the most relevant candidates faster — but they must be used with care, because they can also entrench bias and reject qualified candidates for superficial reasons.

The right use of AI resume analysis is as a triage tool, not a filter. The AI reads each resume, extracts the structured facts (education, work history, skills, certifications), and compares them to the job description. Recruiters use the AI's output to prioritize which applications to read in full first — saving the most attention for the candidates most likely to match. The AI doesn't make the final call on any candidate; humans do.

Bias is the central concern. Resumes carry signals (name, gender, photo, address, school prestige) that can correlate with demographic characteristics, and AI models can pick up on those correlations even when they're not explicitly asked to. Reducing bias means stripping those signals before analysis, monitoring outcomes across demographic groups, and always keeping a human in the loop. We treat AI resume analysis as a triage accelerator with explicit bias mitigation, not as a decision-maker.
