Trimming what doesn't matter
Cropping removes the parts of an image that don't matter, focusing attention on what does. It's the most fundamental image editing operation — used for thumbnail creation (square 1:1 crops for grids), social media (16:9 cover photos, 9:16 stories), photo composition (rule-of-thirds reframing), and cleaning up screenshots (removing the surrounding browser chrome).
Aspect ratio choice depends on destination. Square (1:1) is the universal thumbnail ratio, used in galleries, profile pictures, and most grid layouts. 16:9 is the standard for hero images, blog covers, and YouTube thumbnails. 9:16 is for vertical video covers and Instagram stories. 4:3 is for traditional photo prints. Picking the right ratio before cropping ensures your output fits its destination without further distortion.
For batch workflows (creating 100 thumbnails from 100 photos), use the aspect-ratio preset and apply the same crop to all images. The crop box will be positioned to capture the center of each image by default, which is usually where the subject is. For fine-grained control on individual images, free crop lets you drag exactly the region you want.
