Going deeper

Switching to the modern format

WebP is the right format for web delivery today. It's smaller than JPG at equal quality, supports transparency like PNG, and is supported by every modern browser. For an image-heavy site, switching all images to WebP can cut bandwidth by 30% with no visible quality loss — a meaningful performance and cost improvement at any scale.

The conversion itself is straightforward, but the quality setting matters. WebP at quality 80 looks at least as good as JPG at quality 85, and is 25-30% smaller. For graphics and screenshots, the lossless WebP option produces files significantly smaller than PNG with no quality loss at all. For photos, lossy WebP at quality 80 is the right choice.

The main caveat is downstream compatibility. While browsers all support WebP now, some older image tools (older Photoshop versions, some image libraries) don't. If your workflow includes editing the output further in legacy tools, JPG might still be the right call. For web delivery and most modern workflows, WebP wins.
