Leaving WebP for universal compatibility
WebP has become a default format for many tools — image CDNs, content management systems, modern cameras. But some workflows still need PNG: legacy image editors, document tools, and certain print pipelines don't accept WebP. Converting to PNG unlocks those workflows while preserving all of WebP's visual qualities.
The conversion is lossless and complete — pixel-by-pixel identical content, transparency preserved, no quality loss. The tradeoff is file size: PNG is meaningfully larger than WebP for the same content, especially for photographic images. If you're converting for compatibility rather than for editing, also consider WebP to JPG — JPG is even more universally supported and smaller for photo content.
For images you intend to edit further, PNG is the right destination: it's lossless, so repeated saves in Photoshop don't accumulate quality loss. For images you just need to share with someone whose tools don't speak WebP, JPG is usually the better choice — smaller, equally compatible, and the loss is invisible for photo content at quality 85+.
