QR codes for the physical world

QR codes are the bridge between the physical and digital worlds. A printed QR code on a business card, a product label, a poster, or a restaurant menu lets people scan with their phone and instantly reach the encoded content — a website, a vCard, a WiFi login, plain text. Unlike old-school barcodes, QR codes can encode hundreds of characters and are scannable by every modern phone.

The content type matters because scanners behave differently for each. A URL QR opens the URL in the phone's browser. A vCard QR opens the contact info in the phone's contacts app, with an option to add to contacts. A WiFi QR opens the WiFi network settings, with an option to connect. A plain-text QR shows the text in a notification, with an option to copy. The right content type makes the QR useful — a URL QR on a business card is fine, but a vCard QR is friendlier.

When generating QR codes for print, size and contrast matter. A minimum of about 200×200 pixels at the print size you're using is the floor for reliable scanning by phone cameras. Contrast should be black-on-white or close to it — fancy color schemes that look good on screen may not scan reliably. For print at small sizes (1 inch or less), test the QR with a real phone before mass production.
