Why Word-to-PDF is non-trivial
Microsoft Word's .docx format is a complex XML package that describes content and layout intentions, but the final rendered layout depends on Word's own typesetting engine — and that engine isn't open. A faithful Word-to-PDF converter has to either reproduce Word's layout decisions (line breaks, page breaks, widow/orphan control, kerning) or hand the file to an actual Word engine and capture the result.
Cloud-based converters typically use LibreOffice or a server-side Word instance. Both have known divergences from desktop Word: fonts substitute, page numbers reflow, table column widths shift. For most documents this is invisible; for tightly-designed newsletters, marketing collateral, or legally-templated contracts, it can be visibly off.
Until our converter reliably handles edge cases (right-to-left text, complex tables, custom fonts, embedded objects), we won't ship it. TXT to PDF and Markdown to PDF are available today for plain text and structured content.
