Page numbers, done right
Adding page numbers seems trivial until you've sent a 40-page report without them and someone tries to reference 'the third paragraph on page… well, somewhere in the middle.' Numbered pages make documents navigable in conversation, in footnotes, in citations and in legal references. For anything longer than a one-pager, page numbers are non-negotiable.
The position of the number matters more than people realize. Bottom-center is the classic, neutral choice for fiction and essays. Bottom-right is standard for business documents because it doesn't conflict with left-side binding. Top-right works well for slides or for documents that will be printed and bound at the top. Whatever you pick, be consistent — a PDF where page 12 is bottom-center and page 13 is top-right looks unprofessional.
If this PDF will become part of a larger bound document (a thesis with appendices, a contract package), use the 'start at' field to make numbering continue from the previous section. That way the page numbers in your table of contents still match the actual physical pages.
